046: 6 Daily Habits That Prevent Writing Burnout

So today’s topic is Daily Habits to Avoid Writing Burnout. It’s no secret that writers who are constantly pecking away at the keys can develop some habits that are counterproductive to their ability to write, stay fresh, and be creative. When a writer begins to burn out, things like doubt, depression, anxiety, and frustration begin set in and make us even more unproductive. It’s becomes a vicious cycle that can stifle our work and our desire to create.

So if you want to be happy, healthy, and productive as a writer these tips will keep you doing your best work for longer stretches:

Habit 1: Be Aware

  • Notice when you need to take a breather. Set a timer for 25-45 minutes at a time with either a 5 or 15 minute break after the alarm sounds.
  • Tide app will help you keep track of time and show you when you are the most productive.
  • Stop while the words are still flowing to make it easier to pick back up after your break.
  • See certain interruptions as promptings to stop.

Habit 2: Be Active

  • You can’t write all the time. It’s good to have to have activities outside of writing to keep you engaged physically and mentally.
  • Examples: swimming, running, reading for fun, crocheting, volunteering

Habit 3: Be Healthy

  • Take time to hydrate and eat.
  • Once per hour, stop and drink.
  • Take time to stand and stretch your eyes. Look off into the distance every half-hour and then look at objects at varying distances.
  • Replace some of your caffeine with aromatherapy. Peppermint is a great refreshing, stimulant.

Habit 4: Be Rested

  • Your mind needs rest to recover. If you can, build in a short 15-20 minute nap once or twice a day and go to bed at a reasonable hour.

Habit 5: Be Playful

  • Make sure that you take time to have to have fun during our writing day.
  • Play games on your phone or computer, play outside with your kids or pets, read for fun, or watch a show on TV.

Habit 6: Be Giving

  • When we encourage others, we get encouraged.
  • Text a fellow writer or a friend.
  • Share a writing friend’s book on social media.
  • Leave a review for a writer that you know.
  • Compliment someone you come across in your play or active time.
  • Find ways to spread some love.
